Portuguese materials in contemporary interiors

Granite, schist, cork, limewash. A short reading of what the country offers the designer.

Detail of natural stone and oak surfaces in soft light

Portugal is small, yet its materials change every hundred kilometres. Granite in the north, schist in the interior, limestone around Lisboa, marble in Estremoz.

Stone

Local stone ties a house to its ground. Used honestly, with simple finishes, it needs little else around it.

Lime and cork

Lime plaster breathes and softens light. Cork, still underused indoors, brings warmth and acoustic calm.

Craft

The country retains workshops that can still make by hand. Designing with them is a responsibility as much as a privilege.
